It's a Wrap!

Webster at Indy

With indoor fireworks lighting the night sky of the Indianapolis RCA Dome, the Webster High School Marching Band ended its year 2001 competition season.

Four student musician buses left Webster High School at 6:30am on Thursday, November 8 to attend the Bands of America Grand Nationals competition at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, Indiana. Ninety Bands representing states from as far away as California to Massachusetts participated in competition from November 8th to November 10th. The Webster group, the only band representing New York State, offered it's program, based on selections from Aaron Copland's "The Red Pony" and "Our Town" on the morning of Friday, November 9th in preliminary competition.

The Webster students' exemplary performance earned them a rating of 21st overall with the color guard placing 9th overall. Director Dick Fischette and his staff expressed their pride in the hard work, dedication and achievement of this years band members. At the end of its 17th season, the Webster High School Marching Band continues to represent our community true to their motto of Excellence through Class, Style, and Pride!.

The Saying Goes...

"It takes many hands to make light work" could be the philosophy of the Webster High School Marching Band Boosters as they prepare for the Autumn Fanfare. This year the band has 138 student members. Multiply that times as many parents and you have the man (woman) power that it takes to host a show that thousands come to watch every year. Every parent is expected to do a job (however big or small) the day of the show. The boosters fill jobs doing everything from grounds crew to security to food preparation and sales. The only people from the organization allowed to watch the show are the students themselves. This is the only time during the season they get to actually see other bands perform.

The Autumn Fanfare has been widely hailed as one of the best shows in the state. The food concessions feature homemade chili, hot dogs, Italian sausage and much more. There is a baked goods booth full of homemade treats. The paraphernalia booth is sort of a gift shop for music lovers. This year they are featuring flower and candy grams that family and friends can send to their favorite band members. There is also an area in the booth where you can make your own pins.

This year the Fanfare is hosting twelve bands from across New York and one from Pennsylvania. They compete at different divisional levels ranging from "Small School 1 & 3" and "Large School 2 & 3" to National Class. Trophies this year are sponsored by Piehler Pontiac.

A special feature at the end of the competition is Senior Recognition. Students to be honored this year are Stephen Austin, Heidi Bellinger, Laura Blood, Jennifer Cioppa, Lisa Crable, Stacy Dupuis, Taylor Heberling, Eric Heveron-Smith, Patricia Hohl, Megan Lang, Kimberly Lazzar, Evan Lloyd, Stacey Mark, Nicole Meeks, Melissa Miller, Katie O'Brien, Audra Pollatta, Chris Reynolds, Mark Rowe, Mike Schinlever, Carolyn Spencer, Amy Steele, Kalin Tischer, and Dan Wartinger.

A short fireworks display will immediately follow the awards presentation as part of the Webster Community Fall Expo. For safety reasons, the audience will be asked to remain in the stands until the display is over. The Fanfare is Saturday, October 20th at Schroeder High School at 875 Ridge Rd. Gates will open at 4:30 with opening ceremonies at 5:45. Advance sale tickets at Hedgedorns are $4.00, $5.00 at the door. Children 5 and under are free. The band is donating 25 cents from each ticket sold to the Webster Community Chest.

BOA Regional at Hofstra

Just one month after the World Trade Center attack, the Webster High School Marching Band traveled to Hofstra University on Long Island to perform in the "Bands of America" regional competition. Seventeen bands from various states around the eastern seaboard participated in the competition.

Webster had an exemplary performance in the preliminary competition placing first in the music category and second overall. During finals competition the band placed fifth. The drumline had the special honor to be chosen to play for the finals retreat. They literally had them "rockin'in the aisles" while the ten finalist bands formed on the field for the awards ceremony.

The band had an unplanned "detour" through New York City on the way home Sunday. The lead bus driver took them on a mini tour through the city passing such sites as St. Patrick's Cathedral, Grand Central Station, Radio City Music Hall, the NBC Studios, Broadway, and Times Square. They did not travel near the World Trade Center site but did go by "Station 54" and the bronze memorial statue dedicated to our fallen firefighters. The buses took the Lincoln Tunnel out of the city to the New Jersey Turnpike. As they emerged from the tunnel, on the other side of the Turnpike were nothing but miles and miles of motorcycles. The Hell's Angels had closed off the highway for a memorial bike ride into New York City. They happened to be in the "right place at the right time" to see the rolling spectacle. The students saw first hand the true spirit of the people of New York. This will be a trip that band members, staff and followers will not soon forget.

The Season Begins!

The Webster High School Marching Band performed in the first competition of their 2001 season at Eastridge High School. The band debuted their new uniform, similar in style to the old one, but with a sleeker, more fitted look. The jacket is two-toned instead of all white and the signature front sash is now blue and gold sequins. The band is keeping their trademark "Aussie" hat, but one that is brighter white with a larger plume. This uniform virtually displays their motto of "Excellence through Class, Style and Pride".

Their second competition, September 15th, was in Baldwinsville, New York. The band took second place with a score of 83.71. This past weekend, saw the band in Medina, New York. They scored a high 87.07, so far the best of any national class band in the state.

Next week the band performs in Orchard Park, the following week in Victor. October 12th, 13th and 14th the band will travel to Hofstra University to participate in the Bands of America regional competition.

The WHSMB Boosters will host their annual Autumn Fanfare Saturday, October 20th which is being held in conjunction with the new Webster Community Fall Expo. The Fanfare starts at 5:30 pm and fireworks sponsored by the Fall Expo will start at 9:30 pm. Twelve bands from across New York state are scheduled to perform with Webster playing in exhibition. Advance sale tickets will be sold at Hegedorn's. For more information, call the booster hotline at 234-8684 or visit our website at www.webster.monroe.edu/whsmb/
